Default RE070 17" vs PS2 17" vs PS2 18" for 'average' road surfaces

Moved from RE070 225/45/17 to PS2 235/45/17 on my 05 STi a couple of weeks ago, then got my alignment redone, and have done about 1,000 miles now, mainly on the motorway. I’ve been really pleased with the better cushioning and the tramlining has completely disappeared. I really wanted 18” rims, but the missus put her foot down. This weekend, I ventured out on to some of my favourite A-road sweeping bends and B-road twisties to see how the new tyres compared. They didn’t – not by a long shot. Whilst I noticed improved grip on bad surfaces, the car has lost its edge on average and good surfaces as it wollows about. I did suspect this might happen when I noticed just how thick the sidewalls of the RE070 were during the tyre change. Question is, what is the better combination for an 'average' surface A/B road? … RE070 on 17” rims or PS2’s on 18” rims?

A wider tyre means the sidewalls will be angled inwards \ / = worst
A standard tyre will have the sidewalls vertical | | = best
A narrower tyre will have the sidewalls angled outwards / \ = good

From my experience over the last 5 years..... And many tyres, NOT RE070 tho' yet !

Should have stuck to 225/45/17 size if on a 7.5" rim, 235 on an 8" rim !

All the JDM's now have 235 as standard

the RE070 is a semi slick stiff sidewall tyre which is also available as a 235 now ask Ian litchfield for details he can get them.

The PS2 although being very good tyre is an alround weather tyre so you will get less positive feel compared to the re070, you are not camparing like for like!!

Try the pirelli corsa next time they are better than the re070 in my opinion have tried both on my JDM STI, pirellis dont last that long though but awesome grip!!
