Default brake advice please

i need some new disks and pads for an my99 uk turbo (fronts).
Can anyone recomend me a decent setup that wont cost the earth? The last ones i used were godspeed grooved disks with tar - ox pads but the disks seem to rust up really quickly for some reason as i only really use the car at weekends. Sometimes after just a week they were seized on and made a horrible grinding noise for the first few miles. This could have been the pads fault but i dont really know. Either way they have been vibrating like mad for weeks now when i use them and now they just grind constantly. This is after 10k at the very most by the way and i dont hammer them that much so they need replacing. Bit skint with xmas coming up so cant really spend loads but i need to get it back on the road. Any help apreciated. cheers

standard disks and pads on the back by the way so i may upgrade the rear pads to match the front depending on cost.

It sounds as though your calipers could be seized as well , especially if the car is left standing for times , seems to be more common with the Subaru 4 pot caliper lately. seized calipers will overheat the discs and warp them , so the quicker you get them sorted the less damage they could do

I would check the calipers first , the pistons should move in to the calipers fairly easy , if not they need to come out to either clean , or replace them.

The discs rusting after being left standing is normal , all makes of discs would do this ,

how would i check the calipers? You mean take the pads out and squeeze it together by hand, should that be possible or would i need a clamp to close it up? If they are sticky can i just clean the pistons myself or would it be a big job? thanks

If the piston wasnt to bad you could clean it with some henry cloth, remember when you strip the caliper down, to not loose anything, and try not to dammage the rubber seals either.

Most caliper pistons are chrome plated or stainless steel so don't go mad with any abrasive. A green scourer pad should be enough. If not fine wet and dry is as far as you should go.
