I run MY00 classic on 215/40/17s and have never had any problems with rubbing. Must be honest in that the cars had 17in wheels on it since I bought it so can't say whether the ride would be better on any other size

My classic runs on the same, and has since about 3 years after I got it. The wheels are newage WRX wheels, which I think suit the car. They WERE silver, but I swapped them for gunmetal.

Dunno if the ride is altered, around the same time I had ALK, Whiteline rear ARB, and solid droplinks too.

I've heard of problems with running 18's, they seem to affect the handling so i'm told.

18's will affect handling and ride.

According to Mike Wood at Prodrive, 17" wheels are best for a classic.

I've got 215/35/18's on mine.. they don't rub but as mentioned they do affect ride quality a bit, but you soon get used to it.

They feel quite harsh on the road, you feel every lump and bump, they're also quite skitish.. prone to "tramlining" on the slightest road defect or sometimes even white lines.

They used to say that 16" wheels were best......... but that was when they came fitted with 15" as standard :0 .
I have some 17" ST2s and the standard wheels for my MY00. The ST2s are lovely and the car does feel a little sharper on them but the ride is significantly worse than with the oe wheels. They are a very heavy wheel and it is probably this rather than the reduced sidewall that buggers up the ride.
Watch out for offset. Many fit ET48 which does work (just) but Prodrive 17" wheels should be ET52/53. They look right on the car whereas the ET48s stick out too much.

I've had two set of 16"s, one set of 17"s and I now have a set of 18"s on my classic and agree with the above.

The 18"'s look better but the 17"s gave the best ride and felt better in the corners.

I'll be going back to 17"'s when I turn the old girl into a track car,

I´m just guessing, but I think the problems with 18" are the increased unsprung weight if you still riding with original suspension. This was set up for 16" and 18" will just be a to much of a change for it. You could probably get a good handling with 18" if you get a set of adjustable coilovers to deal with the increased unsprung weight. You still would feel every lump in the road though, even more! I have a set of forged OZ 18" on my wishlist, sadly there is so many things to buy and so little money to buy it for...

You could try Julian at Rare Rims, he does some excellent deals on wheel/tyre packages. Lightweight Rota wheels.

I've had 2 sets off him now

Might have something to do with it.. but i think it more the diameter/tread width relationship that's a good deal of the problem. 215 isn't particularly wide. I've had 18's on my other car but the tread width is 225 and while there was still an element of handling quirks it wasn't as pronounced as with the 215's on the scoob.

It has nothing to do with the weight it's the 35 ratio that causes the problem, You feel every bump and there isn't much of a tyre wall. grip is fine it's just the cornering is bit slower
