what are the widest tyres that will fit on standard classic aloys

Ive got standard 16inch classic subaru alloys on the back of my ford escort project car and im just wondering what would be the widest tyres i could fit on to them?

Assuming a 16x7J wheel, sensibly, Something around 215mm wide max. Any wider and you risk not supporting the sidewall properly (assuming road tyres).

Cheers J, i think i might need some wider wheels then as i want as much traction as possible, what wheel and tyre sizes would you recomend..
