Default Brake Upgrade

hi,

My scooby is going to need some new discs and pads shortly, I want to look at upgrading them at the same time, as there is no point in spending money on standard brakes and then more on uprated ones in a few months.

its a 97 model with the single piston sliding calipers, I've got 16's on the car which I dont want to change.

What upgrade options are there? and how much cash am I looking to spend?

Would it be worthwhile fitting grooved discs and uprated pads? or should I really be upgrading the calipers too?

Its a bit of a minefield all the different options so my advice would be to speak to Alyn at AS Performance. He will give you sensible advice and costs involved without pushing you to the most expensive option.

I had some good advice off him but ended up spending lots for a big braking improvement on my 03 sti.

You could get some second hand 4 Pot calipers and discs for around the £250mark. Or 2 Pot WRX calipers and discs go for a fraction of that, at most £50. I went from 2 pots to 4 Pots with standard discs and pads and the difference is amazing..

AS Performance are great, I went to them when I upgraded the brakes on my MY02 - he steered me away from the more expensive stuff and I got a set of grooved discs & Goodridge hoses at a very reasonable price. Coupled with some uprated brake pads (Ferodo DS2500) and decent brake fluid its a great combination that didnt cost a bomb and considerably improved braking.
Since you only have single piston calipers though, it would be worthwhile switching them as said above.

excellent so I want to look at changing the calipers for ones from the later model (98 on?)

then standard discs and pads should be fine? or maybe an upgrade to grooved discs and red stuff pads would be useful as well?

i've had grooved discs and ebc pads before and have found them to be a great combination

ive actually got two pot sliding calipers on the front not the single pots, so will probably stick with those for the time being just with some better discs/pads
