Default major braking problem!!

i have a serious prob with my 98 wagon brakes, anyone any ideas, whats happening is when slowing down to a halt the brake pedal pulses at last few seconds of braking ,and makes the sound of cogs slipping, also when driving at speeds of over 80mph and brake heavily car veers all over the road, and there is no brake unless reaplied, the pedal is firm no air in system, there is no abs light on the dash, just fitted 4 pots this morning checked the abs ring behind disk thats fine, any ideas.

jack the car up , hold the wheel top and bottom and shake it to so if there is any play , it sounds as though your wheel bearing could have gone , this will give you noises , and lose the brakes until you pump them

As above plus: sticky or seized caliper pistons, mis-matching pad compounds front to rear (i.e performance front, stock rear affecting bias), worn shocks, sloppy suspension bushes, different tyres brands or wear across the same axle (or front to rear).
