Unhappy

Can anybody help me? I have a 97 Scoob with standard brakes and 17" wheels. Now and then I suffer from a very loud squeeking noise from the front wheels. It sounds like finger nails down a blackboard. Lasts some times for many miles then just goes away as suddenly as it started. I have tries new pads, but this does not seem to have sorted the problem. Any ideas folks?

If your brakes are o.k then you should check your wheel bearings, i recently had a noise like this and it turned out to be that.

Chaz
do you live in area with stoney roads, could it be a small stone getting stuck in between the disc and pad? just as a test, next time it does it, stop and reverse a few metres, then go forwards agin and see if it's gone away.
I might be totally wrong, but it's worth a shot!

Tried this and it worked for a while but then the noise came back. Looks like you might be on the right track though.

Cheers.

My MY00 has been doing this since Saturday night, all the time I'm driving. I knew the front brakes were on their way out, but the garage reckoned they would last 7500 to the next service. Well, maybe nearer 1500. Took it to Kwik Fit on Sunday morning and they said that the passenger-side front disc was probably slightly warped (it squeaked once per revolution) and that the pads on it didn't have long left.

Once my local dealer wakes up, it will be back for new pads & discs. Merry Christmas!
