£450 for new front pads and discs?!
Just been quoted this for replacing the front pads and discs (which caused an MoT failure) on my bug eye WRX (52 plate).
I personally think this is ridiculous, as half the above quote is for the pads alone. Surely if you're changing the discs, changing the pads is hardly any extra work at all. I've specified only standard parts also.
I want to source the parts and do the fitting myself, but I'm not sure how difficult the discs are to replace. Is this a major job and does it require any specialist tools?

Looking at AS Performance's website, it would appear you can source the parts (cheapest) for less than £100. The rest must be labour then.
I've changed sets of pads before (inlcuding my classic Scoob) in around half an hour, so how long can discs take?
The guy who quoted me charges around £60 an hour labour.

To get the discs off you only need to undo the 2 caliper bolts and support the caliper so it doesn't strain the hose. Make sure the hub face is nice and clean before replacing disc. Caliper bolts 59 ft-lb and worth using a bit of medium strength threadlock for peace of mind. Scoobyclinic only charge £30/hr labour. I would expect an experienced mech to only take an hour to do this. Takes me about 2 hours as I'm picky about cleaning and copperslipping.

Cheers for the replies guys. Going to get the parts and fit myself (probably from AS Performance).
OE parts from Subaru were £218 for discs and pads, so the labour isn't as bad as I thought. Still going to get the bits and fit myself though.

Can't remember the name, but they are the least expensive (cheapest) ones he does. Came to £165 including delivery. They are still better than the Subaru set that comes to £220.

Any think over £400 is getting pretty close to robbery IMO. Unless you putting on serious anchors.
As a lot of PPL on here do it might be about time you learn't how to use a spanner or two. i know breaks are important, but there are not that difficult to replace, and there are loads of threads on here, PROJECTS, that will tell you what and how.
Can save you up to £150 on a £400 job by a garage.

Fitted my new pads/discs last night.
With the right tools, the job was pretty easy. Took a while to get one of top caliper bolts lined up so it would thread in, but apart from that a dead easy job.
Saved around £300 for a couple of hours work.
