Unhappy

Okey dokey - popped to Tyres Northampton yesterday to have EBC Turbogroove discs and Greenstuff pads fitted, although initial impressions are good, when I brake I'm getting wobble back through the steering wheel now Didn't have it before...

I've been driving carefully since fitting and covered about 120 miles since, alot stop start and slow on the M1 (if you were on it around the M25 yesterday lunchtime you'll know what I mean ) and haven't yet used the brakes in anger or hard at all. I've been braking very gradually and carefully.

Firstly - does anyone know how these brakes should be correctly bedded in?

Secondly - does anyone know of a cure or have any thoughts as to why the steering wheel now wobbles with normal braking? This wasn't present before (and I may be imagining it but there seems to be slight wheel wobble around 70-80, its not the balancing as I've had that done recently )

Taking it back would be a bit of a pain as its over a 200 mile round trip and therefore another 40 quid petrol

Ideas?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Cheers
Neil.

It could well be that they managed to get a bit of muck on the hub face before the disc went on, this may then make the discs go round sort of wobbly, and therefore when you brake the pads may be getting knocked and forth slightly, the wooble would get worse as the speed increases, so the fix would be to remove the discs, and then clean the hub face with something like a wire brush, then clean the inside if the disc (just in case) and refit.
This job is not rocket science, and as long as you've got a set of spanners and half a brain, it's easily a diy job, as is fittng the brakes in the first place.

Hello mate!
sounds a bit odd - i do get a bit of 'vibration' * on mine - i believe it is due to the grooves and dimples, i only get this when the brakes get hot - To be honest i though that i hadf warped them but it has not got any worse and the brakes are fierce! I read another post from an EBC user with the same and several replies came back echoing this 'vibration' thing.

*I cannot feel the 'vibration' it through the steering wheel mind it is more of a noise, it hardly notices through the brake pedal if at all. it could be grease or such on a pad(s) maybee?

It sounds like there may be a bit o cr@p behind the disk/hub. I would be suprised with TN as thsy are fastidious, sounds like this may be the cause.

As far as bedding it i believe the paperwork said around 500 miles or so - gentle braking (unless you need to brake harder)

Steering Wheel whobble - i know you have had the balance done recently - It still sounds like the balance as it is between certain speeds - I would get the balance done again, maybe one of the tyres has rotated on a rim a bit.

give me a call if it will help

or 01604 410300(w)

Give either Mark or Malc @TN a ring - 01604 588599

Am thinking of organising a meet between xmas and the new year so if you do need to come up perhaps we can tie it up. You are welcome to stay over - Not a date or nothing

all the best

Paul

Cheers guys

I could just be imagining it as I'm sure TN have done a good job, I'll give it a bit longer till they've had a little more use and see what happens.

I'm booked in at Subaru 4 You on sat to have my hoses and fluid done, so if they're not better by then I'll see if they can have a quick shufty, otherwise I might have to pop back up........

Had a word with Mark - he said it wasn't right at all, they shouldn't wobble at all, so I'm off back to TN on Sat to have some new replacements fitted. And get the hoses done while I'm there

Scooby Java,
Do a search for "EBC BRAKES" on this site and then do the same search on www.impreza-rs.com and then you decide if using the EBC greens or reds are worth it.
I was going to order a set but after reading the nightmares that people have had I have decided to buy the original pads. They may not be the best and they sure do dust up a lot, but I prefer that to buying new rotors (discs) every time I change the pads .
BMW's BBS board seems to echo the same WARPING stories.
The only way to know for sure is to take the rotors to a machine shop to check them for warping. BEST OF LUCK
