Default Wheel offset confused??

With wheel offset (ET) does the higher or lower the number mean they stick out from the hub more or are nearer the hub?

I/E:Is ET 35, is that sticking out of the arch/hub or closer in the arch/hub, than say ET 30.

Offset is the distance between the mounting face and centerline of the wheel in MM.

Et35 means the hud is 5mm nearer the centerline then et40.

So if for example a cars ET was 35 and you fitted wheels with an ET of say 25, then they would sit inside the wheel arch 10mm more than wheels with an ET 35, or would they sit 10mm further out??

Further out.
The lower the number the further out they stick.

Going slightly offf topic, Dont you think its weird that offset et is measured in mm (and tyre widths) but rim dia and width is in inches ??

ET0 would be 0mm offset from the centre of the hub so for a 7J (inch !!) rim 3.5 inches would be either side.

It's just easier to use inches for some measurements, 17 inch wheel or a 431.8mm wheel. Tyre dimentions are another mix e.g. 215mm/40%-17inch.
