Just wondering if anyone else had experienced the above....

Picked up my new WRX Wagon 3 weeks ago.... noticed very badly scored front discs the next day.....

Wondered if the appearance would improve with some major pedal abuse.... NOPE.... Just stayed the same....

Mentioned it at my 1000 mile service.... got a comment like "It's something to do with how they transport them from Japan.. Quite common".... and a brand new set fitted immediately. (warranty job, of course)

Result: Shimmering, smooth, perfect discs!!

Respect to Aird Motors (Beauly) for excellent service.
Bit curious how this wasn't picked up during PDI though....

Any similar experiences?? Please share.

That is perfectly normal! They are deliberatly machined like that to assist the bedding-in. They should look pretty normal after a fair bit of use.

I have a MY98, they were scored pretty early on, and despite some heavy use, never improved. Am now in the market for some new disks and pads

"Something to do with how they're transported from Japan"? What, exactly? And what's wrong with a bit of scoring anyway? No self-respecting disc should be without them. Think of the extra friction surface area

Probably where the car has been sat in a compound outside for months waiting for someone to buy, I've seen quite a few brand new wrx's and P1's in dealers with badly corroded/scored front and rear discs. My 2000 MY which I waited for 6 months to arrive from Japan certainly didn't have this problem.

Hmmmm.... Thanks for the comments everyone....

GregW... you summed it up. I should have been clearer initially.... I'm talking about MAJOR scoring here, not the pattern left from when the discs were machined.... Wish I'd taken a photo now!
Deep, deep grooves at irregular intervals over the surface...
They didn't improve with 1000 miles of hard use, they just put a pattern on the pads & presumably would have died a premature death.

The take home message is "take a good look before you drive off!" My franchised dealer was happy to replace everything.... But it was interesting how it slipped through a PDI without comment.
New discs now smooth as silk after another 500 miles, and stopping power noticeably better.

Perhaps all the containers from Japan were full, so they just towed my car behind the ship....
