Pro's or Con's with 205/40/17 Toyos
Has anyone out there got any advice as to using Toyo T1S 205/40/17's on a classic 98 turbo?
I'm aware the the standard size is 205/45/17 and that the rolling circumference will be a bit smaller, but there seems to be some good deals going on the 205/40 sizes and I always like a quality bargain.
Any other pointers?

Had that combination on my 1999 UK turbo with prodrive option 17's.
Drove very well indeed.
I personally highly rate the Toyo construction; good still sidewall etc, but can be a bit noisey on a poor motorway surface.

I've had 17" wheels on my late '98 car for a while now. It rides on Toyo T1R's, in 215/40 17" size, which I was told, on here and at tyre dealers, is the correct size for the car.
I have had no problems at all, no rub and I prefer these tyres to the Goodyear F1 GSD3's they replaced.

I have recently swapped over to 205/40/17 Toyo R888 from 215/45. With regards to circumference you may have slightly better acceleration but otherwise there is no discernible ride or handling difference as it is such a small change.

Thanks for the responses so far, I was just a bit concerned with the 40 profile on the 205 tyre as when I did a search there was very little info relating to this particular size and no one seemed to be using them on a classic.
I also noticed the recommended sizes are 205/45/17, 215/40/17 and 215/40/17 which seem to be based on price and choice, so wondered what the problem might be with the 205/40/17 as the price is even cheaper than the others.

205/40 17, being narrower (obviously) depending on the width of the wheel (if it's a 7J rim) will not give you a nice vertical side wall, this is why the 215/40 is the recommended size for 17" wheels on a classic, 215/45 may rub on the inside rears if you have 4 adults in the car. The Toyos have good strong sidewalls and their ride quality in 40 profile is fine, better i think than the original 205/50 16's.
