Unhappy Leaky Alloys

97 Classic.

Getting to the age now where alloys / tyres are not all holding their pressure.

I need some new tyres - already have them and just want to know, if I get the new ones put on is there ANY chance they will seal properly and not loose pressure or do I have to do some work on the wheels ?

Pain in the butt rubbish job

Unless the alloys are physically damaged, they can't leak. Change your tyres first, and be sure the tyre fitting puts a new valve in.

Physical damage is that the alloy has started to corrode. Certainly round the rim the laquer is coming off.

I understand that the aluminium corrodes and means the tyre doesn't make popper contact and hence you get symptoms of a slow puncture.

I always get new valves.

Not experienced that before, and I've had alloys over ten years old before.
There are place that can repair that kind of thing.
These guys do it: http://www.abacotyres.co.uk/about.asp
but the images are not working for me at the mo. I have seen it on there.

Had the same problem as you say you need new tyres go for new alloys as well I got some 17's inovite tarmac from midland wheels. At least with new you know what you are getting and refurbing was about £40 a wheel anyway. Treat your scoob you know you want to!

Porous alloys were a known problem and indeed a warranty item on MY94-97 15" alloys. And yes, the symptoms were consistant with a slow puncture. You can repair - I am unsure as to cost/time, so it may be worth tracking down some replacement second hand 15/16" wheels - They come up for sale on here now and then.
