Cool tarox kit for 16' wheels. Opinions

I am thinking of buying a tarox 6 pot or 10 pot front brake kit with 306mm discs for the classic. The car has 400+hp and it used for hillclimp.

Does anybody has expirience with these brakes?
Will they be enough for the application, or do I need bigger discs?

The reason I want to keep the 16' wheels is that they are lighter and with the tyre combination I use, i keed the gear ratios short, if I use 17s I will increase the overall wheel diameter which is no good for the ratios.

If you go 215/17/40's then the diamter/circumference of the over all tyre will be as close to 205/16/50's as makes no odds.

(unless of course you are alread on 40's on your 16's)

The tyres I use are 225/45/16 semi slicks with 604mm diameter, the problem is that I cannot find wider than 225 on 16''. So if I go for 17'' the most probable is 235/40/17 with goes up to 620mm diameter.

Anyway the question was if somebody has expirience with Tarox 306mm and 6pot or 10 pot calipers.

Thanks anyway...

Hi Stavros,

I've stuck to 16" for trackdays too, my forged Rays weight less than just about anything else you could fit to an Impreza and they cost very little. No specific experience with the Tarox kit but I currently run Compbrake 4-pots with 278mm disks (don't scoff!) and, with the right pads, I can outbrake most cars fade-free for full 20min trackday sessions.

I don't think disk diameter will be your problem, especially for a hillclimb, but you'd need to be satisfied the master cylinder can push enough volume for the multipot caliper.

Which 225/45 tyres do you use, out of interest, and do you have them on 7" rims?

Tarox calipers always seem a bit gimmicky to me. What are the largest AP's you can get under 16"? Looks like the CP5200-1035 4 pot kit with 304mm disc. I would expect these to perform loads better than anything fom Tarox whether it has 6 or 10 pots (10 pots! what a load of muppets).

Remember it's not the number of pistons that determine the amount of braking effort but the pad area and effective diameter. We've already established that both use virtually the same diameter disc to fit under the wheels. AP CP5200 calipers use a CP3215 pad with 57.4cm2 area. Ask Tarox what area pad they use, if they don't know (my bet) then it's a gimmick rather than a serious competition caliper.

The tires I use at the moment are the dunlops DZ02G, they are excellent, but since I consider more horsepower for next season, I may have to change to other brand since I there is not wider size than this. My wheels are RAYS TE37 16x7 +45 OFFSET but I use EIBACH 20mm pro-spacers.

Currently I am 3rd overall in the championship, the first overall it's a Lancia Intgralle with more than 600whp, (i only have 380whp) who uses TAROX ten piston 315mm discs and he is more than happy with this set up.

The combination I am thinking of is that I will fit 17x8 superleggeras, 235/40/17 TOYO R888 and 330mm discs and six pot AP.
The problem though will be the gear ratios since I use dog straight cut gearkit with 4door sti's ratios which are liittle long at the moment (but because I have good tarque from the 2.5L and small turbo, it is ok) and will be much longer with the 17''. I am looking for shorter than 4.444 final ratio, but I cannot find any.

Have you rolled the arches? I thought 45mm offset is close for the arches, let alone 25!

>600 at the wheels? Which championship is that? I'd like to watch that Lancia, and indeed yourself!

Graham 911 will probably chip-in at some point - hillclimbs in the west midlands, but different category of tyres (V70A, list 1b?), less power and stock 4-pots of some description.

Sorry to distract you further, but what suspension do you use?

cheers
Andy

I use TEIN HA with pillow ball upper mounts.
I rolled and pulled out the edges.

The lancia is realy impressive as well as the second place car, EVO6 with similar horsepower, the sound and speed of them reminds Group B cars.

How can I put some pictures here? Please somebody guide me.

Stavros:
You surely do not hill climb in England?

I too run 16's and at the moment stock 4 pot STi disc/calipers with Pagid pads, and this works well on UK hillclimbs, but if you run in Europe you probably run hill of 5 Km distance?
I recently saw a video of a Lancia (and EVO) just as you describe, and they ARE bloody fast!

I run Kumho V70 205 x 45 x 16 and they are 590mm diameter which improves a lot of dynamics on the car.

The braking is all about pad area to disc diameter and the number of pistons to do with applying the available hydraulic pressure evenly (or by design, unevenly) to the pad to maximise the heat generation and cooling. The AP's will be the lightest and the most effective I believe at getting the job done, but on a UK hill climb you don't use the brakes much, but when you do it is really hard!

We would all love to see some pics!
