215/45/17s on STi Rims
I have newage STi wheels on my classic with 225/45/17 tyres. I need to replace the tyres and would like to go to the narrower 215/45 section, mainly for a bit more clearance but they're also cheaper.
What are the pros & cons?
Cheers

I have 215/45 on Bugeye OE WRX 17" rims and mine still rub the arches on full bump.
Not sure if the offsets differ regards STI / WRX though

STi wheels are a bit wider than WRX, 8" as opposed to 7.5" I believe. My STis used to rub the arches and also touch the strut with the RE040s very square profile Then I had the rear arches rolled and a 3mm spacer and now they just touch the arch on the N/S/R when loaded and on an undulating road.
I'd like to fit Toyo R888 215/45s to gain a little more clearance, which is 4mm according to the Toyo site.
Just hoping that someone knows or has tried that size before ordering.

I have STI 7 rims on my classic with 215/40/17 tyres on them, my car has been lowered by 40mm so 45's will not fit in the arches, the other problem I had was sometimes the tyres caught the arch liners. The ET of the STI rim is correct for my car so there is no interfearence with the suspension or wheel arch. 215/40/17 may be a better option for you.

Hi Wurzel, Thanks and sorry for not replying earlier.
I've considered lowering to be out of the question, certainly with 225 section. Your idea of 215/40 is something I hadn't considered because I don't really want to go to a smaller diameter due to having Type R ratios.
205/50/16 = 611.4 diameter (Original)
215/40/17 = 603.8
215/45/17 = 625.3
225/45/17 = 634.3 (running now)
205/40/17 = 595.8
Since I started this reply, S/net disappeared and I made some enquiries. Your suggested 215/40 would be OK but they're not that common and therefore, more costly. I've actually bought a set of R888s from Camskill. They were running their own reduced price, plus a £10 back voucher for each tyre from Toyo. So a good deal
BTW as I was working out the tyre diameters, it occured to me that I have raised the car by 11.5mm just by fitting the 225/45s. Don't know quite what that means but if you multiply that by the weight of the car, with whatever forces are acting on it during hard cornering, it'll probably mean sweet FA
Now, to finish off the Yokos in the next event or two and get them fitted, by which time, I hope to have the suspension sorted too. Never ending pit
Cheers
Gerry
