Default help needed regarding smoking discs??

Hi .
I went out in the car today as normal done about 20 ish miles ( Not fast just normal speeds) and noticed the a smell of pads burning , so i stopped the car and the pads were smoking front drivers side, so i drove back home stopped and still burning and smoking., so i then jacked the car up straight away and was expecting the wheel to be solid and not budge( Thought the pistons were stuck on the caliper) but it was as free as a bird ,now i was ,any ideas what is causing this ?please

Had this happen on a couple of other cars (not the scoob).

You'd be driving down the road, then stinking smoke would start billowing from one of the wheels, pull up in a cloud of smoke, think WTF , let it cool down, drive off fine !! Had a look later that evening, no probs found. Had my mechanic look at it, no probs found - wierd.

Its strange, coz each time, I noticed the smell of burning before I realised anything wrong with my brakes

Just a thought........do the pads move slightly inside the caliper (ie they're not getting wedged in the body).

On my 4 pots, the previous owner painted the inside faces with hammerite(where the pads move against), and over time the rust bubbled up underneath, which raised the paintwork and caused the pads to stick in certain places inside the caliper. - but never caused plumes of smoke

maybe you have something similar.
