Default Track tyres (R888/DZ02G/A048 etc)

Time to replace my R888s. Question is do I go for the same again or try something different.

R888s are great on the road, but they only last a few laps on track before overheating. As a result they also do not last very long, but are relatively cheap.

Dunlop DZ02G an unknown quantity. D01Js (the predecessor) meant to be very good, long lasting. Any experience? (of DZ02G)

Don't know anything about A048 - anyone tried these on a scooby? They are expensive...

Thoughts please!

Much of a much, the new dunlops will be just as good if not beter than the older D01j. I beleve they are a slightly harder compound than the toyo so will need some warming up where as the toyos dont. As for wear i cant see there being much in it if you are using both for track use. The new dunlops work out 10 pounds a corner more.

The yoko's will not perform as well as the dunlop and the toyo's in the dry, but will be beter in the wet..

Default Track tyres

Not correct, depending on the size of tire you are looking for the AD048 is probably the best you can get for dry track use, much better than the dunlop versions with a choice of compound as well. You could also look at the Bridgestone RE55S as an alternative, again, it would depend on what size of tyre you are looking at.

Little bit of info and don’t shoot the messenger; I spoke with the folks at Camskill just yesterday and they rate the tyres as follows in 225/40/18 or 235/40/18 size. Note this would be for road legal tyres that would be used for track day use, as a pose to hill climbing and sprints.

1. Dunlop DO1J £182
2. Yoko A048 Medium-Hard £186
3. Kumho V70A Medium-Hard £153
4. Toyo R888 £128

If it were for road legal tyres for hill climbing and sprints then I believe they said option 2 and 3 in medium compound would be better, although the Dunlop was still a very good option as well, just takes longer to get up to temp and is obviously harder wearing that the medium compound tyres mentioned.

However, now that Toyo have reduced the price of the R888, it’s a cheap tyre compared to the others. +/- 220 quid cheaper than option 1 and 2 and a 100 quid cheaper than option 3.

Thanks Jools, that is a help.
I run 16's so I can use the soft Kumho compound, and they DO heat up instantly.

all good info

Depends on what car your running and what size wheels, BUT try Bridgestone RE070's, they dont overheat (i know ive given these serious stick on an airfield and the car just gripped more and more the warmer they got unlike the yoko's on an evo MR320 )
Lower in price than your above few (120 quid) and wear pretty well
