Default 'Snow Wheels'

Sorry if this has been asked before, as the search is down i cant check

Im getting a STI 05 model, it would be nice if i could find some narrow wheels that i could put high wall 'heavy winter' tyres on for those few fun days that we get a year.

Has anyone done this or know of what wheels i could posibly use?

Simon

You'll need at least 17 inch wheels to clear the Brembo brakes, and you won't find many narrower tyres unless you go for specialist motorsport winter tyres.

I've fitted winter tyres 225/45x17 to a standard set of wheels, and they have been nothing short of astounding in the snow and ice we've had this year so far (I live in Aberdeenshire). OK, probably not quite as good as narrow studded tyres, but many times more grip and traction in poor conditions. I can now actually get near full boost in 2nd gear without the wheels spinning now (on F1s, you could get instant wheelspin, even in 3rd at almost any revs).

I got a set of 4 Michelin Pilot Aplin PA2s for about £90 each fully fitted from Costco.

Costco are great.

Thinking along the same lines to have another set of wheels with winter tyres on as I'm worried snowchains will damage the standard alloys.

Are there any insurance implications from changing the wheels?

Not if they are the same type of wheels (ie OEM Subaru fitment). I think most insurance companies would look favourably on a driver who went to the extra expense and hassle of fitting winter tyres to their car.
