Default recent wheel damage

Was up on Dartmoor last week doing a speed run when after breaking on a downhill bend (camber to left, right hand bend), entering the middle of the road the car shook violently. Thought i had hit a rock on the rear offside but when I pulled over, the only damage was to the front near side- totally screwed half the wheel.
Any ideas why? I have a MY05 STI.

Pothole or grate sticking up but I'd have thought there'd be a good chance you'd have hit with the front wheel as well?

Lift off oversteer for bend and clobbered something at the side with the back end stepping out?

I've got the same car and am wary about things like that happening if playing due to an incident earlier in the year

I used to have 17" Speedline Turinis on my bugeye and they seemed bullet-proof as I hit an almighty pothole and not a mark on the wheel and rode fine afterwards (feared for the suspension as it happened )

Good job I missed the bloody pony crossing up ahead!

Havent had it checked out yet- seems to drive ok

Havent been V happy with the overall sterring since I got it in June.
Thought about taking it to TSL to have an overhaul.

The wheel is not too bad but felt like I had hit a wall!

Cheers
