Iam I rite beliveing that 205 45 is the best size tyre to run on a 17inch rim for performance.

Wt are the downsides to 40s?
How much diference is there apart from looking like rubber bands!

Define better.

DSpeed, 205/45/17 was considered the optimum tyre size by Prodrive. The RB5 had 'em as did the P1. A lot of people use 215/40/17 because of the increased availability.

Availability and price on 215/40/17's seem to push people to these over the limited 205/45/17 selection of tyres.

There is no better, just different, Prodrive put the 205/45/17's on, if you want to go for those then do but if you want a wider choice of tyres then the 215/40/17's may be a better option for variety, this doesnt mean they are better or worse, just greater options.
