Default Where to get cheap tyres? Are budgets a no no?

I need to replace all 4 tyres as i have just bought a 52 plate wrx with its original tyres on it. Its obviously never been driven hard for them to have lasted 3 years. I am a little skint and i am thinking of buying budgets (£40) is it advisable. Other wise what makes are resonable and from where?

Cheers.

I would strongly recommend that you dont put budget tyres on a scooby, toyo's can be had for as little as £70 each and IMO are damn fine tyres. I put some budget tyres on a modified cinquecento sporting once and it was a very scary experience, I took them off after 2 days as they completely ruined the cars handling.

Thumbs up

Dont fit budget tyres, u will find yourself eating them up, I fit Toyo Proxes T1-S on mineand you can get tham at a good price if you shop about, have a supplier in central scotland who will do them fitted and balanced for about £70 plus the chancellors cut. They are good enough for TVR's so they are good enough for a scooby!! You can get T1-R's which are reinforced, have a look at the what happens when u hit a pothole at ***mph on this thread http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showthread.php?t=470807

Anyway 3yrs?? you ever used full boost yet???????

Budget tyres are fine if you can drive properly and know your limits.

I replaced my original bridgestones at 16k with some nankang ex 500's.same tread pattern as the originals, same drive as well, done 15k on them and loads of tread left, now gone to 17's with toyos and these are no better than the nankangs.

Having just spent over £300 on a set of Goodyear Eagle F1s for my scooby, I can understand the temptation to scrimp on tyres. It does seem like a lot to spend on a consumable

BUT

In many ways, if you get nothing else right with your car, you should get good quality tyres; they are your only point of contact with the road, and a bad set will detract from -in worse cases, dangerously so- even the best chassis. They are of fundamental importance if you want to go fast safely.

I can tentatively (as they're new and have not yet tested them in soaking wet conditions, although that's where they are supposed to excel) recommend the GoodYear Eagle F1s. Mine have not even bedded in yet and I can already feel lot more "progression" in their transition from grip to slip than I could with the std Bridgestones 010s. Ride quality and road noise are also noticeably better.

My advice would be bite the bullet and DONT go for budgets.

I fit on mine a set of bridgestone Potenza, this is an excellent tyre. I would highly recommend.

I had some Bridgestone Potenza's fitted to my sti 4, when I bought it 2 years ago. Thought they were 'ok', nothing special and they did understeer quite badly in the wet. They also wore out quite quickly (The fronts lasted 9K!).

Then I upgraded to 17 inch alloys (scoobynet group buy!) which came wrapped in the Toyo T1-S tyre. What a difference! It may well have been due to the fact that my new wheel+tyre combo weighed in at 7KG less, each!

The Toyo's just inspire confidence, wet and dry.

IMHO:
Toyo's suit the Impreza really well come rain or shine.
The only good tyre Bridgestone made was the SO2 PP superceeded by the cr@p (in comparison) SO3.

I think the TS-1 was the Toyo copy of the SO2 PP

Lot of personal opinion here, but I HAVE tried all these tyres on 2 Imprezas for road and track.

Graham.

Looked at Mytyres - but with delivery and the fact you've got to get them fit, balanced, etc it worked out cheaper for me to go straight toa tyre dealer

In my opinion it's the only place the car actually touches the road so why scrimp there, BUT then to be fair my tyres are nearly as bald as iain duncan smith so I need to pull my finger out soon, just can't decide weather to spend the extra for 18s and sell the 17s

daz_vx220, what would it cost if you had a bump? Going for ultra cheap (i.e. poorer quality) tyres is a false economy IMHO. They are the only things which allows you to steer and stop. Go for a good tyre and shop around to get it for as cheap a price as you can. It's amazing what deals you can get from the tyre company's with a bit of bargaining. For instance get a price of someone like mytyres.co.uk, then ring up a local tyre wholesaler and ask them for their best price. Often you'll find they will match the price, taking 20/30/40+ quid a tyre off their original quote, and maybe you get fitting thrown in for nothing.

Every other mod you do to your car: brakes, suspension, even engine, is really about optimising the way the tyre interacts with the road. A cheap tyre is wasting everything else the impreza can offer IMHO.

Avon ZZ3 are a reasonable tyre and camskill.co.uk are doing them cheap eg 215/40/17 £63 each delivered if you don't want to spend mega bucks.
