Carrying a spare wheel in the boot.

Carrying a spare wheel in the boot.
Right then, I am thinking about shodding my spare 17" ST2 with a tyre as a spare wheel. The problem I have is that the spare wheel at the moment is a space saver (that doesn't fit my 335 Godspeed conversion) and there does not seem to be enough room for a wider spare. My old Cav GSI had a raised carpet to cater for this, but this limits what you can carry in the boot.
Whats the best option?

I can get an 18" wheel in, but it lifts the carpet by 4" or so, which I can live with.
Alternative is to keep the spacesaver, and if you get a front puncture, take it off, put a back wheel on the front and the ss on the rear.
