Large rear brakes DIY conversion
I have been thinking of up rating the rears on my UK MY00 which are the currently single pot versions on standard discs. (The fronts are on a 335mm Godspeed conversion with EBC redstuff pads)
I thought that I would find a set of twin pot or 4 pot calipers to use along with a large disc and bell which would be sourced new from either Willwood or Godspeed. I would design and machine out a bracket to extend the caliper up to the right position and hey presto!
Questions I am pondering:
Is it really worth going for a big brake conversion on the rear?
Would buying some uprated discs and pads for the rear be enough? (less cost)
How about using a 2/4pot on the rear with uprated discs and pads? (slighly more costly having to source some calipers)
Will using a 4 pot setup on the rear upset the braking balance of the car and make it dodgy to drive?

I wanted to do this with mine, I just fitted STi7 Brembos to the front and wanted to fit the standard 4 pots to the rear but was advised against it as you would then get to much braking power on the back causing the wheels to lock up and possible spinning the car or if not spinning it not being in full control, as the majority of the braking is done by the front it seemed pointless changing the rears aswell.
And to top it all my car is 5 years old and still has the original rear pads on it so the rear brakes can't obviously be doing much, unless my rear brakes do not work

Nezz - Why not just go for the larger diameter (300mm) Godspeed rear disc kit and keep the standard callipers?
From what I understand the rears only get a maximum of about 30% of the braking force of the fronts anyway ....

Wurzel - that was my concern to but I think a 2 pot setup woudl be ok tho.
Mark - I didnt fancy paying £600+ for the setup, hence the DIY effort.

If you want to go the 2 pot route then it's worth looking out for a complete set of MY01-MY04 WRX rear hub assemblies, they'll bolt right on.
I paid £200 for a set which even included new handbrake cables...
