Why would you want to do away with ABS?

Your insurers may not like it.
And to pass the MOT you'll have to remove the entire system.

Plus I doubt it would fix the pedal travel, as I belive it's more of an issue with the master cylinder and servo.

I understand where your comming from though, I spent most of my life driving vehicles without abs, and do like to have the overall say of when I want all of the braking pressure released off the wheels A bad choice of brake pads for teh situation or bad match between front and rear can cause some nasty side effects with the ABS, so in some minority cases your better off without it.

IMHO Never remove ABS, It's a life-saver! Unless the car is a pure track-car, you may get the idiot pull out in front and your into a reflex/panic brake situation; I've had it happen. Talk all you like about cadance braking, but in a panic situation just stomp the peddle and steer.
As far (sic) as peddle travel goes, that can be adjusted at the peddle with the nuts on the push-bar. I'm sure there is a technical name, but I don't know it.

Better fluid, braided lines, and a master cylinder support bracket will all help pedal travel/feel, then learn to live with what you're left with, ABS is there for a reason, it saves lives and stops accidents...
