Default best brake upgrade?

Hi all on this gloomy 'june' monday morning,

Recently purcahase a MY93 WRX and one of the main things i dislike is the brakes, they seem spnogey and unresponsive at the best of times!
Now, the disks and pads arent worn out so I can only assume standard brakes arent much cop...

I dont particularly want to spend 1000s on a big brake conversion so what would you suggest in ways of an upgrade?

i.e. maybe upgrading to 'sports' pads and discs, and maybe braided hoses... has anyone done this, and what sort of improvement do you get?

cheers!

chris

You could always try looking for a set of 'SUBARU' 4 pot calipers with 294mm discs.
Braided lines, decent fluid and a good set of pads to match such as Ferodo, Pagid, Mintex or EBC Redstuff Ceramics will help with this set up

Standard on UK cars from MY98 on I think, easy to spot as they have 'SUBARU' witten across them.

Brake support bracket also helps by stopping the bulkhead flexing when you press the pedal.

That said, you can't beat going the 4 pot and braided lines route, I did it last weekend and they feel so much better.

change the fluid and add braided hoses, and have the pads de-glazed at the same time

Just to let you know... i had a 95 series mcrae which originally had 2pots and small discs. They were terrible especially seeing as the car had been re-mapped producing 280bhp!! I swapped them for a 2nd hand set of sti 4 pots + 294mm discs + ebc redstuff pads and some braided hoses!!! I thought that this little lot would really make the car stop sharp!

I was wrong.... there was some improvement, but for the £450 i spent on calipers and discs plus another £300 for pads/hoses and fitting it really wasn't worth the expense because they weren't that much better tbh.

I now have a P1 with the prodrive brakes... massive 4pot calipers (and i mean MASSIVE) with 330mm discs. These brakes WORK! they are stunning and you can feel where the extra expense has gone! Mate of mine has an evo 6 on brembos (ok standard but they were respected 4 stopping power) and they are crap in comparison these brakes!

I felt a bit robbed when replacing the mcrae's brakes...i really was expecting more performance! --- beware!

Bear in mind that the Alcon calipers are anything up to £500 2nd hand alone. Plus close to another £500 for a pair of front discs and then theres pads on top.

There nothing wrong with the OE 4 pots for normal every day driving - if Subaru fitted them to 300+ STIs they should cope with sub 300 cars. My car has a few mods and running OE discs/pads without issue. Only reason I've upgraded mine to the godspeed kit is for the odd track day I plan to do - this upgrade still uses the OE caliper and has had lots of +ve feedback from SN members.

Mate had Alcons on his and yes, the caliper is huge!!!
