Question What spanner size

Any ideas as to what size spanner is needed for undoing the bleed nipples on the four pot calipers ?

Thanks

It's metric, but i cant remember what size. it will certainly be in any normal metric spanner set.

Thanks Dan,

I only have a full socket set and need to buy the spanner individually.

10mm rings a bell. Certainly is for the rears. 11mm for the nipples on Prodrive Alcons tho.... positive when i did my brakes before fitting the Alcons i only used the one size for all 4 nipples. So i'd go with 10mm.

yep, 8mm. I'd avoid an open neck spanner as it's easy to round the head. if you do get an open-neck one, make sure it's a flare one that grips a lot better.

Ozzy, what is a flare open neck spanner ? Should I just get a ratchet spanner ?

Hakon, it's difficult to describe. An normal open-neck spanner has the ends parallel to each other. A "flared" spanner the edges are further round, so that it can't slip around the edges of the nut.

Like this:-

I just used a ring-type one myself, but was advised to use the flare type ones wherever possible.

Knowing Subaru i wouldn't be surprised if they are different even on the same type of calipers. My rears are sliding type, vented disc... so the same as UK MY99/00. I am positive i used 10mm on the rear (it was only a day and a bit ago), i don't have anything smaller .

Hakon,

no worries.

Tony,

hmm. I had to swap a broken braided pipe over the New Year. I used 10mm to loosen the braided hose, but I'm positive I used my 8mm on the nipples.

Mine are sliding type too, with the usual 4-pots on the front

If I wasn't @ work, I'd go out and try them
