Question Wear rate on Breaks

Is it possible to tell how worn your break pads are without removing the wheel first?

I took my Wagon to the garage to have something else looked at and whilst the car was up on the ramp I was told the break pads need replaceing - cost £178

I know the wheel never came off during the inspection so I was wondering how they could tell.

cheers

Hi

Shine a torch at the BRAKE pads, then you can see how much they have worn

Shouldn't take a total novice more than an hour!! and maybe £60-70 for decent pads from ASPerformance!!

Probably much better pads than dealer fit ones too, and you have the added satisfaction of knowing its done right. (Hopefully ;-)
Thats about 100 squid for free. Now what could you spend that on.....Daz

I have done pads before on my 205 GTi but I no longer have any trolly jacks - dont trust those scissor jacks for prolonged work - especially when I park on a mixture of mud and gravel, or tools to do the job. Was a bit shocked at the price myself, apparently the replacement pads are £86 +VAT to start with for the Subaru items. Maybe it is time to look around for an aftermarket set.
