Unusual wear? MY01 rear disc/pad
I've just gone to replace my rear pads and was suprised at the condition of the inside rear driver's side pad. It's heavily grooved on the inner and outer edge also part of the leading edge has disintergrated! The disc has corresponding grooves too.
The passenger side is similar, except it the leading edge is intact. The outer pad on both sides have even wear across the disc/pad face.
Is this normal? The disc/pad has covered 38K. The pistons are free.
Car is a MY01 WRX with the standard 290mm vented disc, two pot rear caliper.
Regards,
Ian

Judging by my rear pads (40k on an MY02) which are coming to the end of their life, I'd say that was about right for mileage.
But the unusual wear across the pad I'm not sure about.

the unusual wear on most rear disc cars is due to the discs rusting, the rear brakes are hardly used as most braking is done on the front so the surface area tends to rust a bit and the pads tend to stick as they hardly move, this combimation just buggers them up.

Your problem has arisen due to a build up of cr#p between the pad and caliper.
The dealers never remove and clean the rear pads, my local dealer's head mechanic left due to them cutting corners on jobs like these within the servicing schedules, they wanted the guys to JETWASH the calipers with the wheels still fitted and charge for pad removal and cleaning.
How do i know this, well my old MY01 started to snake under high speed braking, when i removed the rear pads the drivers side inner pad was almost welded to the caliper due a build up of rust and cr#p, i then replaced all the rears and removed and cleaned them every 5 months to make sure everything was fine, the car was serviced 1 month earlier and the rear pads should have been removed and cleaned and didnt get done.
