Default Yokohama A032R's

These generally seem to be favoured on Lotus Elise's but I wondered whether anyone has tried them on an Impreza.

I am considering some for my 16" rims - 205/50R-16, albeit they only come in a soft compound in this size.

Thats just it, the weight of the car. They may be good on an Elise that does trackdays, but I bet the same Elise does'nt the daily grind in the winter.

I have A048s on my Westfield that is only 650kg, they have about the same wear rate as the 32's and I expect 3000 miles from them driven hard.

If you drove your subaru at the pace to justify the extra grip they produce, I'd be surprised if you get 2000 miles out of them, and thats if they don't overheat and fall apart!

Yes, I agree, however, I do about 1,000 miles a year and the majority of these are hillclimbing when I need the softest tyre possible for grip.

I am looking for some A006T's for hillclimb use (for the dry) and some A032R's (for the wet) and usual road use.

If I was doing several thousand miles a year ordinary road use, I agree they would definitely not be suitable.

speak to 911 who posts on here.. he uses avons for hill climbing..

Ive got dunlop d01j's, but dont think they come in 16's

911 and I liase frequently. He has used Kumho's up until now and will be using Avon's next year.

I borrowed some Avon's this year but they only make the super soft compound in 16" for a 7.5" rim and the normal sized 16" wheel is a 7" rim width. The problem with the sticky Avon's on a 7.5" rim is that they have a habit of pulling the drive shaft out of the diff !.

I was looking for a super soft compound in a 7" rim which whilst won't give the grip of a 7.5" will hopefully prevent the above problem.

The A006T's are fine for the dry but then I require a soft compound for the wet hence the thought of the soft compound A032R's.

Toyo's/Goodyear/Pirelli/Bridgestone, etc are fine as a road tyre but when you are using them for motorsport you realise the limitations of road tyres compared to a competition tyre.

In that case can you get 048 in 16"? I chose these over 032 because they are better in the damp.

Unfortunately 048R's are available in 12", 13", 14", 15", 17" & 18" but not 16" -not sure why but they are not available in this size.

Hence the question re the 032R's rather than the A048R's.

I remember speaking to an Elise owner at Le Mans the year before last who said the 032R's are great in the dry but not so good in the wet, so perhaps not the right choice. In fact he found to his cost the limits in the wet having spun his Elise with considerable damage.

I am simply looking for a soft compound wet weather tyre that is road legal - there are plenty of competition tyres that fall into this category such as Kumho, Pirelli, Yokohama, Dunlop, etc but they are not road legal.

Perhaps there isn't such a beast !?.

If you do go for the Yokos, get a price from http://www.polleymotorsport.co.uk/tyres.asp

I think toyo do a track based tyre, 888 IIRC, not sure if its soft enough, Caterham drivers like the Avon 500 IIRC - again not sure about 16"

Edit to say the A048 gave me amazing speed at a monsooned Cadwell park, I was as quick as similar specced Westy's on road tyres. In the dry They are in a different league - great one stop tyre for all conditions, road and track.

Also, looking at the Polley site the A006 can be cut for a wet

This is a very tricky area to bottom out!

My soft Kumho's are simply fantastic in wet and dry. Ran at Prescott in wet/damp/dry in one day with only 3 seconds difference in times dry/wet!
For the hills there is no real time to get them warm, but the Kumho's do get warm, and after a 49 second hill climb the tread surface is grained and swirled just like a thrashed slick off a circiut.
My medium grade Kumho's have done 3000 miles now, have passed the MoT too on my 17'' P1's.
The only real tyre for sprints/hill climbs (dragracing also?) are the real deal, Avons.
Carman ran 17's x 7.5 '' rims and Avons on killer BBS split lightweight rims. The tyres rubbed the rear arches and one front badly. Mark A has these tyres now!

Stuart, contact Dave at BMTR and ask him if you REALLY need the 7.5 rim for the slicks.
BMTR keep on offering me kevlar walled Avons in super soft, 16'' x 7 albeit at 170 a corner, but made for Escort Cossie weight, These have also been used on Mark Waldren's carbon bodied Elise!
I think these Avons are 620mm diameter and about the same as 205 section radials.
They are cross ply wound of course...

Good luck, I'll be there soon unless i buy a 6 speeder for the car instead of the tyres and stick with the Kumhos for early next season. Depends on my sponsor................

Missed a bit!

The halfshafts pulling our (at the rear?) puzzles me.

I have the Whiteline extended lower arms on my car, the suspension dropped 20mm from stock, and poly bushes ever where in the chassis. There is still free float in the drive shaft between the CV's, about 8 mm IIRC.

Are your friends popping shafts due to excessive lowering/rubber pivot deflection under hard cornering?

Just a thought.
