Question Anybody replaced a wheel stud?

...you know, what your nuts screw (ahem) onto?

got to replace one and need advice - what to do when wheel is taken off - and will be replacing brake pads at the same time also. I understand I need a 32mm socket to get the hub off, is this correct?

ta.

On the front?

If so then it's a piece of p*ss. You don't need to touch the hub nut.

Take the wheel off and take a hammer and punch to the stud, knock it back into the wheel hub about 10mm and the splined bit will be out of the hub flange and you can wiggle the stud out from behind the flange. Forget whether you need to take the disc off or not (but that's easy too) or if you can reach round behind it.

Then put the new stud in as far as it will go, put some kind of spacer over it (I used the ring end of an 19mm spanner) and fit a wheel nut. Tighten the wheel nut against the spacer and it will pull the splined bit of the stud into the flange. When you refit the wheel check the wheel nut torque after a day or so as the stud will gradually pull further into the flange.

Edited to say I'm not sure about the back, the stud may or may not come out from behind the flange, I've not looked. If not then I guess you'll need to remove the hub.

take the disc off it's easier and you may have to undo the allen key bolts that hold the abs ring on but then it's as chelspeed says

I have had to change 2 front hub bolts today and i think if you are mechanically minded you should be able to do it very simpley, there is not much work involved.
