Default How big a brakes can you put under OEM 17" newage alloys?

For my first major upgrade i am looking to improve the rather tosh OEM brakes on the MY03 WRX

This would be a complete redo, so:

Pads (think ive settled on EBC redstuff)
Discs (not sure.......)
Fluid (Dot 5)
brake lines (goodrich??)

I would intend to do this properly and as such would be setting aside around 2k to do it. My question is, what would be the most effective disc in terms of size and also fit, for performance and to a lesser extent looks. I do like the look of the larger grooved and/or drilled discs.

Any thoughts??

Cheers,
Neil.

i take it they are the 335mm kit offered on the parts list? They look nice but are they as good as they look? Im thinking that maybe AP might be a good choice, or some Godspeed ones but i suppose the main thing is that they fit under the wheels like those do!

Godspeed defo fit, thats what I've got, unless you do a LOT of track stuff, then the Godspeed will be more than adequate!!

I can't praise them enough
The calipers are Alcons and pads are allegedly DS2500
It all depend on your budget and possibly warranty issues.
I think the Alcons are £1600 inc fitting.

As you are not too far from me you're welcome to try them out before you decide.

Neil,
Take a look here, http://www.godspeedbrakes.co.uk
So far as I know, Ian doesn't do a big disc kit for the rear, but, you can get discs with grovves to match the front, again, unless you're on track all day, the rears are purely cosmetic!!

I reckon RON dreams about brakes!!lol!

I know that Ian provides a big disc kit for the rear of the classic that has aluminium bells like the front.

This is from an email to me from Ian Godney a while ago.

"Hi

You have 2 options , the cheapest easiest option is to change the discs to
grooved ones , standard sized with better pads , these are £145 a pair for
discs and £85 for mintex M1144 or £125 fro ferodo DS2500 pads , or the other
option is our 325mm rear kit which works on the same principle as the front
kit , whereas the calipers are brought out on a bracket , but they are not
cheap , £595 for the discs and bells , bracket fitting kit and pads

Hope this helps

Cheers Ian"

the warranty wouldnt really be an issue for me, as it would only affect the brake system of the car anyway as your improving it from standard in the first place!

Whereabouts are you butty? might have seen you about?

Neil.

325mm on the rears would be pretty nice the reason i want to do this is that in the future i would like to increase the performance on the car to in excess of 300bhp. So therefore id like to be safe in the knowledge that i can stop the damn thing as well

Mine runs a tad over 300bhp and stops very well on the 335 front and standard rears. I would advise an upgrade of rear pads though!

'I reckon RON dreams about brakes!!lol!'

You're not wrong mate, you can't drive like I do without them!!!!

One of the guy's round these parts has an 03 wrx, and Ian wwas unable to do a 'big kit' for the rear, well, he was at the time, that may have changed by now I guess.
Standard rears are fine for 300bhp, but like already said, pads the same as the fronts would be the best bet.
There's another guy that comes to our meets with 400 odd bhp with nos, who's running on 2 pots!!!!!!!! I guess thats ok if you never slow down eh.............

Ron.

off to dream about brakes!

How big a brakes can you put under 7x17 WRX alloys? Will Prodrive/Alcons work? AP Racing? I'm sure there is a thread about this somewhere, which alloys to fit with what brakes etc.. But I can't find it.

Fizz,

I'd be interested in some piccies for future reference along with part nos. etc. I'm getting round to some of Ian's ø335 discs but may get APs in the future It proves you don't have to junk the discs to get the full AP kit...

Thanks
