Default Minimum Legal Tyre Depth

Can someone remind me if its 2mm or 4mm?

1.6mm across the central 3/4 of the tyre.

excuse my ignorance but does that mean your tyre is legal if its worn at the edges?

Yes, tyre can be bald on the remaining 1/4(or 2*1/8 edges) as long as the ply is not showing.
