Default best wheel wax/protector?

gonna jump for some wheels next week I think, so looking for best option to help keep them clean. I've just used meguiars hotrims so far, and I want to avoid that as a regular cleaner if I can.

So, just soap and water, with wax to help keep clean. But can I just use my current wax (Meguiars gold class), with a standard applicator, or is there another option?

Also, do you do the whole wheel (front/back of spokes, and the inside of the rim? Probably wouldn't do all that once the wheels are on, but I'd give it a go before they go on.
