Default when you go up a size, what happens to the spare?

If you have standard 17" wheels and go up to 18" for example, do you need to buy a new spare wheel? If so, can you buy a space saver one?

Sorry if its a stupid question, but I've just never heard it discussed on here.

No you don't as the rolling diameter of the new wheels stays near enough the same as the old ones.

When you increase wheel size you decrease tyre size to compensate.

I'm looking for a spare alloy to do the job for me - if my front wheel needed chaning, I'd have to take the alloy off the back and put it on the front, then put the spare on the rear (because the spare wouldn't fit over my front brakes).

I am in the same boat as you blueboy but if you jack from the front you can lift both wheels together so its not much of a problem.

Wooooooooo, never thought of that.

I guess I'll have to start looking too.

Jack - where's he then, can he help me change a wheel

Where's the jack point at the front then, didn't know there was anything stable there?

Group buy then

I may well go straight to Speedline for mine (they're supposedly quite cheap) and I don't need a tyre as I've already got a spare one.

Make sure the tyre you put on the spare alloy is not a directional one (has a little arrow on the tyre wall to show which way it must turn) or you will only be able to put it on one side & will need another spare for the other side.

The space saver wheel can run in either direction so one covers any side.

Mark.

True, but isn't it illegal to have different sized wheels on the same axle?

not if it's a spare I don't think - as you'll have to keep the speed limited anyway (as it says in the guidelines).

Just seen your old query about spare wheels. You don't legally need to carry a spare. The M.O.T requires a legal tyre, but only if there is one carried.
ie it doesn't say that you must carry a spare.. You might also have noticed that space savers don't actually save any space in the wheel well, they are only really of use when used in a non-wheel well car.. It is just a way for manufacturers to save money on the 5th alloy!
