Question

Do the 18" rims make much difference in handling on the P1,S?

I found my car went much faster with the bigger wheels on

On a serious note, I found they improved the handling, as the extra grip provided by the wider tyres improved the turn in. As you know, the standard P1 understeers a little. The 18" wheels get give the front a bit more bite.

Ride quality is better than you would expect though.

18" doesn' t mean width - it's diameter, doh!

Improved handling comes from lower profile tyres making the sidewall stiffer- just make sure you renew your denture adhesive before driving on most of our beautifully maintained roads. As most of my fun comes on back roads - motorways being a boring pain in the ****, I stuck with 17" on my P1.

I drove a P1 demonstrator with 17 & 18inch wheels and much preferred the 18's, hence I ordered my new P1 with gold 18 inch wheels. The ride is harsher but the car handles much better with them on. I also had the 'Powerstation Bump Steer' modification on saturday and that has been a relevation. If you have an Impreza P1 get it down to Powerstation in Cheltenham, they have transformed my P1 from a very good handling car to an excellent one.

Mail me if you want more details or to meet up.

Cheers

18's are lovely, but beware..... they do cause the car to tramline a great deal on our wonderful roads.......

Wacko

My 18's used too quite badly, but Powerstation and their BSM (Bumpsteer Modification) have basically eliminated this aspect from the car. The car has been vastly improved and all for under £200.

I would recommend this modification to all Impreza owners.

Fat Boy I think that you will find that the 18's run 225 tyres and the 17's run 215 so that makes the 18's wider....Doh

In which case they are wider wheels as 225 would be too wide for 7J wheels, which wouldn't necessarily be evident to the non cognoscenti from a quote of a wheel diameter not a wheel width.:P

The more serious part was the bit about the stiffer sidewall - I tried both and the 18's were just too harsh on normal roads to justify the change, never mind the cost.I am doubtful as to whether people really detected such fine differences in the handling anyway. Far be it from me to suggest that there may be tarts on such a fine BBS .

Fat Boy Too!

You some sort of bone head?

The 18" ers are wider as MOG correctly pointed out. You'll also find that the 18" tyres have a more supple sidewall, to make the ride acceptable. Many people have commented on the fact that the ride seems smoother with the bigger wheels.

The 18" wheels are also wider - something like 7.5 or 8J wide. This apparent when you see the offset accentuated by the deeper dish around the wheel nuts.

Enjoy your new orthopaedic shoes.

Ciao for now

Bonehead ? It takes one to know one

I think you are talking borrox myself as I'd be surprised if the 18"s I tried had extra supple sidewalls - they would be fine on track but are too harsh for real roads IMHO.
Of course racing the M** P**** boys around Roundabout City they might be OK ! .
Super supple sidewalls? Nah,not likely on 35 profile - they could try to compensate but then that would destroy the point of having lower profile tyres in the first place ie to remove some of the slop (technical term- see Simon de Sideways Vol1), and of course would therefore be admitting that the 18"s would be too harsh for the road anyway, hang on,unless it was just for looks .
I stick with the 17's and rely on pumping them up on track days to reduce sidewall flex/heat generation . BTW it's 7.5J - s'funny I thought that you would have been able to feel that through your steering wheel.

Mog
got any photos? Not the tyres , stupid boy, the tarts, the tarts
