Insurance company and changing brake pads

My insurance company (RAC) when I asked them about upgrading brakes said I must maintain "original specification", but could not give me a definition of this. So presumably drilled/grooved/larger discs or new calipers would be out, but anyone any idea whether aftermarkets pads of the same size would be allowed? They don't seem to able to answer this question - I am going to request a response in writing. Any insurance experts know than answer?

Rang another operator at RAC and they said aftermarket pads were fine, but they would need to refer grooved/vented discs to the underwriters.
Thanks,

I have EBC grooved disks and Greenstuff pads, the RAC are coverering them, but they were fitted before I started the policy.
Called them recently to ask about 4 pots etc. and was told that the underwriters will not cover ANY brake modifications. They also said that they could not understand why someone had agreed to cover mine as they should not have, but that they would continue to do so.
All I can say is that it's a good job I declared the mods in writing, and got the OK in writing too, cos initially they denied all knowledge of the upgrade.

Just tell 'em it was like that when you bought it. They wouldn't know the difference if you had big brakes, small brakes or a couple of ships anchors fitted. They are hardly going to complain if you large brakes stopped you quicker and made a big 'off' a small 'off'. Better brakes are a safety feature designed to make you stop faster - like ABS but more useful.
