Worrying EBC pad disk combo
#1
I used to have EBC Greens with Tarox G88 discs (with 40 or 44 grooves). I also noticed when braking from appr. 100 km/h an aeroplaning (this is how EBC defines it in their instructions) kind of noise. According to EBC this happens in combination with grooved discs and should disappear after some time. With me it got less but didn't go away. So if your noise is a kind of "aeroplaning" noise it should be oke.

I had this with EBC Greens and Black Diamond 12G discs, and presumed it was due to the grooves. However, I've now switched to Mintex 1155s with the same discs and no droning noise

For those of you with EBC greens and turbo groove disks:
When braking from motorway speed do you get a loud sort of groaning noise form the front?
Lasts from about 60mph to 20mph normally.
It's loud enough to a) worry passengers b) worry me into not braking too hard.
At first I assumed it was the grooves, then the pads bedding in and now after 1000 miles I've given up making excuses for it.
Any ideas???

Simon,
The answer is no - so far. I've only done a 100+ miles on my new EBC Greens/Turbo Grooves and they're still bedding in, so only relatively gentle braking.
Will see what the next 2/3 weeks bring when I get past the 500 mile mark and start applying a bit more pressure...

This noise is perfectly normal!
It's a result of the grooves & spots on the disc acting on the surface of the pad - basically doing their job of deglazing the pad surface.
Obviously the harder you press the brake peddal the more noise you are likely to get. It will get slightly quieter with time as the forward edge of the grooves become rounded, but they will still groan if pushed hard or from high speed.

Thanks for the replies.
Interestingly I just rang the garage who supplied and fitted them and they said that EBC now recommend red stuff and there would be 'no noise' and that 'the groaning with Green's was a known problem'.
£88.13(!) for Reds or hope my noise is, as DaveD points out, perfectly normal...

Also using Turbo Groove and Greens, might be noisey but at least I can stop now. Better than standard set-up. Still experience a little fade from 150-0 though

Bizarre...the noise has all but disappeared!
There's still the aeroplaning noise (which I guess is the grooves) but the groan has gone.
Oh well, I'll see if I can find it again on the way to York this weekend.

I also have both noises and have had my Greenstuff and turbo groove discs on for 6k scares the passengers sh*tless and I must admit I don't like the feeling of them..Im seriously thinking of changing to a different set up!

Just nail the brakes and the noise soon goes. If you still get the noise, either brake harder or turn the radio up. You are trying to turn your road car into a comp. car. Sacrifices have to be made.
I've heard Fiesta's don't suffer from this problem at all!
