Question

I have just had a 52500 mile service carried out on my 97 Catalunya. The comments on the invoice state that rear pads & discs will require changing at next service.

Does anybody have any idea how much this will cost thru a dealer as part of the 60,000 mile service? The brakes are still standard 2pots I believe.

A lot will depend on the labour rates charged by your dealer.

I think new discs are about £70 - £80 each, and new pads about £60 - £70, all plus the dreaded VAT.

Should take about 60 - 90 minutes to fit, and adjust the handbrake etc.

Some dealers will offer

Will be far cheaper to get non-OEM pads/discs. You should be able to get uprated pads and discs fitted for less than the cost of OEM kit

Unhappy

Den,

I'd go along with GaryC. I had my OEM pads replaced on my MY99 at it's last service. Skinned me £120 for the fronts. The discs were cracked as well, but I'm glad they were replaced under warranty. Next time, I'll get some Ferrodo (spelling?) ones myself.

I'd use this as an oppertunity to upgrade your front pads/disc. They'll be cheaper than the Subaru parts. I'd probably ask them for a price for the rear pads to see if it's worth getting them elsewhere.

What sort of cracks did you have on your discs, Ozzy?
Were they fine heat cracks running around the middle of the area the pad touches?
Was there any debate over faulty or just wear and tear?
How many miles had you done on them?
I just got my front pads and discs replaced today and they had these fine cracks, dealer going to see if warranty claim poss.
Changed to Black Diamond combis (£160) and EBC red stuff (£100) not bedded in yet but seem good so far.

Exclamation

Doogsy,

Sorry for not replying sooner, but I've not been on the board for a few days.

I couldn't say what the cracks were like as I never saw them and the dealer just said those two magic words "warranty claim". There was no debate about them at all from the dealer or IM.

I'm trying to remember when they were changed. My car's only done 23K, but it was either at the last service 22K (Feb'01) or the previous one at 15K about 6mths earlier.

I had new pads fitted at the same time, but since the dealers gone bust I can't check when it was exactly.

My car's an RB5 bought from Fraser Anderson Stirling. Maybe your dealer can use this as ammo if IM are playing funny buggers!

i'm with GaryC, go for some uprated pads and discs, might be same/cheaper than OEM parts, or you might want to sell out just a little more, like I did.

Last service was told that front pads n discs were creamed, I could go for OEM parts, or uprated parts, i chose the uprated path, I got:

EBC greenstuff pads 58 quid and 2 wilwood cross drilled and vented disks 160 quid, plus also braided hoses 40 quid and dot 5 fluid.

not bad, much better than the previous setup, but then it was creamed somewhat!

Would really have loved to have gone for the 4-pot setup, but alas funds were not available to do so, maybe next year

Red face

Markus,

Excuse my ignorance but was £58 quid for each pad or for the pair?

Having paid £120 for the fronts I'd be a bit p'd off if I could've had some EBC's for half the price

If they were 58 quid it would have been for a set of 4 pads for the front discs im afraid. They will only warp the discs probably,my uprated jobbies did.
