Default STi7 wheels on a MY98 uk wagon

I have been offered a set of sti7 wheels (17x7.5J with a 53mm offset) which currently run with 225/45x17 bridgestones on them,i know i need to change to a 215/40 tyre but when i tryed the wheels on the car it tram lined terribly and was hatefull to drive.what i want to know before i splash out on the correct tyres (probably toyos) is what sort of ride can i expect with this wheel/tyre combination.
the current wheel is a 16x7J with a 53mm offset running on 205/50x16 pirelli P6000 tyres, which give a good predictable ride which i dont want to loose, but the standard wheels look a bit dated now.
If anyone can help me out with this i would be most greatfull. Mark.

If my experience is anything to go by the tramlining is much to do with the tyres - Bridgestones. Bear in mind that with 205/45s or 215/40s, it will tend to sniff out contours in the road more anyway. If you like the pirelli, go for them on the new wheels. Another possibility is the Goodyear F1 GSD3.

Jeremy.

This is the exact question I was going to ask. I've had my 93 WRX saloon for three days now, and bought some STI 8 wheels for it. I think I need 215/40/17s for it, but needed to confirm.
Will these definitely fit, or is there a more suitable size. I didn't get tyres with them, so can put anything on.
What do you mean when you say the 215's will sniff out contours in the road more?
