My MY99 5 door will be due a front pad change shortly. Which of the above would be best, bear in mind that I don't want loads of dust or squeal. The originals are Jurid, I don't find them particularly effective unless warmed up, however they are quiet and the brake dust can be cleaned off fairly easily.

Jim,
The mintex pads produce a lot of dust and are great for the track but the 1155s are not designed for road use they require heat in them before they are effective, mintex themselves and prodrive will tell you the same. Mintex 1144s are for road use and are not much of an upgrade over the std MY99 pads, the pagids or ferrodo ds2000 are probably your best bet for road use.

I have Mintex 1155's on my MY96, they are ok for road use, but can be a bit poor when cold, great if you are on a twisty road.

Downside is that they make one hell of a mess, I have to remove the wheels every 2-3 weeks to give them a proper clean using Wonder Wheels and a scrubbing brush

Cool

I've had a good look at other threads on this as I need to do the same myself. EBC produce higher grades than just green as I'm sure you're aware as such I can put faith in the greens. Alot of scoob owners have praised them for lack of dust lack of fade etc. And also cost effective over others. Will be getting them fitted myself shortly.

Last week I fitted new std discs , EBC greenstuff pads and castrol racing brake fluid to my '91 2.2 legacy . I done my first track day today and got no brake fade at all but the discs went some nice shades of blue . The brakes were superb all day and I was even outbraking a mazda MX5 .
A big plus is that the pads produce no dust .

Ho there
I have no experience of the Mintex pads
IMHO
I have EBC greenstuff and EBC disks (fitted at the same time)
No dust so far and much better braking to boot.

At the moment I'm running a Ford Puma with Green Stuff pads and black diamond discs.

They are ace for the road but useless on track. The pads just melted and the discs blued and cracked.

This could in part be due to the small diameter discs, but the same happened to my mate's FTO.

Cool

I've got Black Diamond x-drilled and grooved discs all round and Mintex 1155 pads.

Although they're better than standard, I'm obviously going to fast or expecting too much...

Save your pennies and buy ANY big-disc & caliper kit.

Edited to add:

Oh yeah, and the Mintex pads squeal like a stuck pig when cold (ie around town, etc).

EBC say you should never use Green Stuff on track, unless it's in a very light car for short period.
They are ace on the road however.

TURBO.
You clearly brake like a beaver!!!!

Wink

Looks like the EBC greens then, though I'll stick with the standard disks for the moment.
Thanks for all the advice.

Are you sure you can get the EBC Greenstuff pads for the 4 pot brakes? A mate of mine off this BBS had no luck at all finding some and in most instances was told they only do them for the 2 pot brakes (pre-1998 models).

Anyone know for sure what the score is?

My my99 Braked well at Donny with genuine Subaru pads etc Did 11/2 track days had little or no fade(but as a learner had to take it a bit easy). Yet totally creamed both front and rears pads. I got from Northhampton Tyres some EBC reds £111 greens were £100 but had no rears. fitted these to get home with as didn't think about bringing spares .

Tried to get some road pads. No luck yet but could get non genuine upto my98's for £42 but had to had buy from Subaru (my99) £188.
Will get some EBC red rears later on to match the spare fronts when I fit the Genuine ones on.

Tony

After Donny I want 400bhp 182 wheels and MASSIVE brakes, and three credit cards!!

Tony.
You're better off using Greens for the road then swapping to Red or Yellow on track. Best of both worlds.

Does anyone [have] an opinion on the Ferodo DS2000 pad?
I'm thinking strictly for road use and pared with the Prodrive grooved discs on the front and standard discs on the rear.
Thanks
Jason

I wouldn't recommend EBC Greens with standard discs. I fitted them and within 2k miles the discs were warped. Since done 8k miles with Black Diamond 12G discs and no problems. It may have been a coincidence of course

Sounds about right. After market pads seem to take the discs over and above their temperature limit.

Can you get red's for the back ? I thought you could only get fronts ?

(Ps I run Pagid Blues and they are great, but very expensive and cracked my standard disks)

Has anyone tried carbon metallics yet ? a couple of friends I have who race use performance friction pads which apparently last a whole season - anyone know where to get them ?

Carl
My disks warped at 17K on my MY99 car, common fault on MY99's i believe - Cr@p disks, replaced under warranty.
My second set of disks where well worn @ 17K again when i swapped them for the EBC disks and Green Stuff pads.
IMHO
The EBC Disks and Greenstuff pads are much better than the stock ones as fitted to the car from new, glad i changed them.

We use Black Diamond grooved discs with Mintex 1155's (std. 4 pots). Have found this to be a very good cheap alternative to the "big" brake conversion. Have done 6 or 7 trackdays without any brake fade and don't have any problems on the road with them either. Don't have too much of a problem with brake dust either (on gold wheels).

The only problem is getting hold of the bloody pads - have currently got 2 sets on order with Mintex direct as each pad is made by hand in the lab and there are apparently no stocks in the whole of the country at present. They've been on order since January and hope to get them this month sometime!!

If anyone knows of anywhere else to get them, please let me know.

Question

Ive got AP 4 pots with grooved discs and mintex 1155's on my 22B They are pretty awesome they are a little messy but I do some serious mileage. Cant say they squeal much at all only slightly when cold but this soon goes away.

Jo - have you tried Graham Goode for the pads as I had some new ones put on last week and they had them in stock?

DS2000 are available for the front and rear of an MY99. Ask your dealer £75 rear, $140 front (approx.)

Hope this helps
