Above started this afternoon - heard it after stereo turned off. Audible at anything over slow walking pace - nothing to do with engine - still there if engine off. Still present during braking. Much louder with window open - sounds like from front right wheel. Pads changed to Mintex 1155 two weeks ago, but brakes not really abused at all. No cracks on disc, disc not obviously warped - never really pushed the brakes at all - no fade at all - brakes still work really well. Only thing I can think of is giving the wheels a really good clean yesterday - but 50 silent miles covered since.
Any ideas - I am working silly hours and can't get it checked for days but need the car.
Forgot to say - 3 month old MY00 driven mainly like a granny!
Thanks for all the help guys.

I'd suggest you check your pads. That noise is normally associated with worn out ones.
A worry considering yours are only a couple of weeks old.
Could be something silly like a stone lodged in the caliper as well though.
Regards
Kurt

John,
Most probably some debris caught between the back plate and the disc.
Try reversing for a short distance, to dislodge the errant stone?
That worked for me on 2 instances on my MY98.
If that doesn't stop the noise, it would be favourite to take the wheel off, and check pads/clear foreign body, before you score your discs.
Cheers MTR

Thanks guys. In the icy dark cold psychiatric hospital where I work (!) I removed the wheel and found the culprit - the (rather insubstantial looking) clip at the back of the brake caliper had pinged off at the top and was scraping against the inside of the inner part of the alloy. No damage done and mercifully silent now.

I've experienced this a few times, each time caused by a small stone becoming wedged between the disc and the backplate. Moved the stone out successfully on two occasions by reversing the car slowly and braking gently whilst moving the steering wheel slowly from lock to lock. Last time it happened, I got a local Kwik-Fit man to remove it with a pair of long-nosed pliers.

hi - this also happened to me recently when changing to ebc disks and pads - the mechanic said the widget had completely dislodged and moved begind the calipers? - he also put anti squeeling pads on...now I can brake in complete silence and move around a corner without screeching...
What ever he did to the brakes he's made a HUGE improvement to my braking feel - I take it all back on my other posts - ebc pads and discs are great for normal road use!
