Hi All
I'm having some grooved disks fitted tomorrow & I'd like to know which is the correct/best way of putting them on.
Should the grooves be aggressive (grooves pointing forward at top of disk) or passive (pointing backwards)?
Is there any "proper" way of doing it and what's the difference? I'd guess aggressive is better, but does it shorten pad life?
Someone told me there was a post on this subject before - a search on grooves & directional didn't find it!
Many Thanks
Richard

Thanks Gary
Another post on 22B mentions that it depends on the disk itself. Apparently dependant on several factors, cooling vanes as well (if used).
I guess it also depends whether the grooves are being used primarily to scrape the surface of the pads (better forward), or to vent gases (better backwards).
I've Tarox items & have emailed them asking the question - in case they don't respond in time; is there anyone out there with Tarox disks and which way do yours point?!
Thanks Again
Richard

OK I have Tarox 44 groove discs on my MY00 and as per the instructions supplied the grooves face backwards but I know that pagid grooved discs are supposed to be put on the other way facing foward I think its down to the manufacturer and the design of the disc

Many Thanks Jake!
I guess the mechanic would have read the instructions or had some previous experience! I was just being paranoid....
Cheers

Dowser,
I can confirm what Jake said about the Pagids facing forwards, there was also a sticker on the disks indicating which one was for each side.
Hope this helps, probably not

Hi Dowser
What do you reckon? You think we gonna install your discs the wrong way! Who do you think fitted mine and Steve's discs?
Just to assure you. There are instructions enclosed how to fit them. And mine are still working!
See ya soon mate

this has me thinking now... I fitted bremsport grooved disks with the grooves sweeping backwards. I did it this way because I felt the gasses would flow up and away from the disk as it rotated. Are they the correct way round? There was no indication on the packaging as to which way they should be.

The majority of after-market grooved discs seem to sweep backwards.
The AP's I have sweep forward, but the vanes sweep back.
It really depends on the manufacturer, but if in doubt I would sweep them back.

Stef are you using Mikes 6 pot kit or still the 4??
If you've the 4 pot kit still then I have mine fitted the other way round (backwards) on the same brake kit.
I've done a few track days and they were fine (obviously not as fast as you do yours though).

Hey Mike!
As we discussed on the phone, I just wanted to make sure If I was worried about the quality of the work I'd be grazing my own knuckles and doing it myself. I've heard nothing but good things about the workshop in question.....!
OK - so it appears to be related to what the manufacturer is trying to achieve with the grooves; anti-glazing or de-gassing.
The Tarox's have the grooves backwards to aid in the removal of any gases that build up. Good for me - hopefully the pads will last longer.....
Thanks for everyone's input - and if you're not sure about your own, ask the manufacturer......or read the instructions...or, even, trust the 'shop doing the work....Heaven Forbid
Thanks

I just can say that at least on the Tarox Japon Sport discs the top end of the grooves look backwards.
I think it's really dependant on their purpose, if they are used to deglace the pads or let the occuring gases get away more quickly.

Maybe silly question
but according to Bob the vanes on the above mentioned discs are for cooling purposes. Why do they have holes as well?? Does it further decrease the heat of the discs or is it only for cosmetic reasons? It really looks good but is it also useful?
Cheers

Don't confuse vents/vanes with grooves.
Grooves are in the 'face' of the disc, vents/vanes are in the outside 'edge'

Stef I have spoken to the guy at GDA who fitted them and he says that was what the instructions said.
Now as tarox run with grooves going backwards and I have done track days with no ill effects, do i really need to have them switched??
Could you tell me what disadvantages I will experience from running my disks **** up as it were??

Ian.
GDA have fitted them wrong. If you have any doubts, call AP yourself. They cannot charge you as they have made an error.
I do not know what may happen if you don't swap them, but for a start, the cooling vanes are also facing the wrong way so won't be as efficient.
I find it hard to believe that AP provide incorrect instructions, but it's your kit so you need to decide what to do.
I for one would be striaght back to GDA, but as you've been using them like that for some time I would perhaps contact the AP technical dept.
