Question

I can not understand why the price of tyres varies so much. For Eagle F1 I have been quoted between £100 and £172 each (16"). On exquiring why in London someone could sell them for £320 for 4 I was told that you had to be careful with Goodyear as you can end up with different compound tyres that are made in South Africa. I am in no way implying that those tyres are inferior in anyway but would like to know if anyone has come across this explanation.

the reason for your south african excuse is different countrys have different needs from tyres ie sweden needs soft tyres for max grip where south africa with it's dirt tracks and very hot asphalt roads need a more hard wearing tyre but at the cost of grip!
