Just ordered new discs and Mintex M1155 compound pads for my MY97 Scooby.

I remember reading somewhere that it was a bad idea to fit high-performance pads at the same time as new discs, as it wouldn't allow either to bed in properly.

So ... can anyone see any advantage in putting the new pads on my car with the old discs for a few hundred miles to bed them in, and then fitting the new discs?

Secondly, what is the recommended procedure for bedding in the Mintex M1155 pad? I forgot to ask when I ordered them.

The opposite is true - the bedding in period is mainly to allow the surface to conform to the shape of the disk. By bedding in and then changing the disks you would have to go through this process again.

The bedding in period also bakes the resin used to bond the pad. To get best performance, bed them in gently for 100 miles, and gradually increase the braking effort over another 100 or so miles until you eventually generate high temperatures via a couple of big stops to cure the pads.

WHOA!!!

I was told the opposite from Mintex rep. Gently heat pads by braking from 30-0 half a dozen times, then take up to 90 and brake hard from 90-30 half a dozen times. I did this on my 1155s and they have been great, problem free, and haven't squeal once!!

 

Can anyone supply a definitive procedure that applies to all brake pads and brake kits?

Next weekend I will be fitting a set of Bremsport front disks and Mintex 1155's so I am very interested in getting the correct "bedding in" info as well.....

Good point ...i've had my Scoobia Mania Ap 4pot set for 3 weeks now , when i asked Mike there he said take it easy for the first 100 miles then do what ya gota do!

So I did no problems at all...YET!

Still be interested if a mechanically minded sort of person could put us all straight though.

Just had Group N Brembo Discs and pagid pads fitted 95 WRX. I was told to take it easy for the first 100 miles by Pete at scoobysport . The reason for this is to ware off the rough machined face on the discs. Having done this the Brakes are working much better , and a lot less dust on the wheels.Graham.

 

Or you could try going along on the motorway late at night, say 60mph or so and apply the brakes gently whilst trying to maintain speed. 20 miles or so should do the trick!
This seemed to work ok for me.

Left foot braking along a motorway for 20 miles... not good, IMHO. 20 Miles of constant brake application will heat the new brake components up too much, you really want to let the components bed in gently and gentle heat cycling is part of this, especially if you have changed pads and discs.

I would agree with Moray on this - I have always been told that the number of times you heat the disks and pads up gently then allow to cool completely, makes the most difference.

Can see the logic in the above, but it is different to the advice given to me by the Mintex guys at the Rally of Wales in March, would've thought they'd know??

5 or 6 0-30 stops (to warm/heat pads) then 5 or 6 90-30 stops ('seals' the pads). 7500 miles after doing that, my 1155s are still going strong (and quiet ).

 

Are Mintex's squealy? That's what I've heard but Gary's comments seem to say that they are quiet.

Perhaps it depends on the bedding in?

I did c3000 miles with 1155s and OE discs - not one squeal, and have now done c4000 miles with grooved discs - still no noise.

The 1155s didn't 'munch' my OE discs, they just caused them to crack due to greater heat.

If you don't hear me coming from the exhaust you will certainly hear my brakes!!!

Followed the bedding in proceedure as laid out by Mintex (30 to 0, then 90 to 30) for the 1155's, they squeal like a bas*ard, and munch standard disks. Got some Braidy Group N disks to fit this weekend, anyone heard of them?

In my experience, the squeal of 1155's is removed when using grooved disks.

I had OE disks to start with and they were very noisy, on went Black Diamond disks (drilled and grooved) which stopped the noise completely.

I now have a Hi Spec brake conversion (with grooves only) and still no noise.

Maybe that is the key!

Part of the reason that I'm binning the OE disks is the cracking, microfractures now macrofractures, well that and the 3mm step

Mind you they have been through 37.5k miles of my driving, two sets of standard pads, 7.5 k miles on the 1155s, and two track days at donno

 

I put the Mintex M1155 pads on this evening. An incredibly straightforward task, it's almost like Subaru designed the brake components to make the whole pad changing process as easy as possible!

Sadly, TAS have been unable to supply me with any discs as of today, despite having ordered them on June 1st (and having my credit card charged on the same day!) They were promised for mid-last week, then today, and now they have guaranteed that they will arrive tomorrow ... we shall see ...

I followed the Mintex bedding in process (cheers Gary ) to the letter, so I'll see how they perform. One thing I did notice is the strong smell that the pads have! I was almost choking when I pulled up at some traffic lights after completing the last 90-30 stop! Eeeuw! I drove around to let them cool, and they seem to bite really strongly now. Great!
