Replacing brake fluid
#1
I want to replace the brake fluid with dot5.1, do i need to empty and flush the whole system or can i simply bleed each wheel while gradually topping up with new fluid without compromising the effectiveness of the dot5.1. How many bleed valves on a non abs system, I presume one at each wheel and one on the master cylinder any others?

Hmmm. Doing it yourself? I just got Subaru to do it during a minor service (I had found a bleed nipple was blocked so the fluid had not been changed for a while!). It only cost £30 so well worth it. My view - for all the hassle get it done in the garage.

It took me about 15 minutes to change my brake fluid. The front ones a dead easy, you don't need to take the wheels off, just do it from behind (!). Just flush the fluid thru. You ought to do the clutch as well, its about 1/2 way up the bellhousing on the near side.

Moz, to answer the question you can just bleed each wheel through and add the 5.1. Start with the nearside rear and bleed out most (but not all) of the resevior. Then do the offside rear, nearside front and off side front. Then go back and do it all again. This will clear out all the old fluid.

I'll be replacing pad's and fitting new hoses to my STI soon but I've never bled brakes on a car that has ABS before, is there any thing else that I should be taking into consideration ?

Hi Moz
I use Castrol SRF racing brake fluid. It`s superdry and must be changed completly at first time othervise the boiling temp. can fall down. When you use normal fluid it`s not necessary to change 100%. It`s not easy fill it up correctly (air bubles=crash). Usually you need 0.6-0.7l
Oh SRF is great but must be changed every 12 months for optimal performance.
