Question

What pads are recommended for road use on MY99? Green Stuff arn't out for another 2-3 months, are Mintex 1155s the best bet? - any tips greatfully received!

Mintex are fine, a lot of people use Pagid, and i think Prodrive are supplying Ferodo DS2000 pads now, and these are supposed to be really good, but may be a bit pricey.

Gary,

The Ferodo pads that Ian mentioned are supposed to be very good. Scoobysport also stock them.

Rob.

Question

Opinion seems to be Mintex and Pagids offer similar levels of performance, but Pagids are quieter. However - at £60 per set of Mintex (falkland) and £193 per set of Pagids (Scoobysport), are the Mintex really £132 squeekier than the Pagids?? or can the Pagids be bought cheaper?

Anyone know a supplier of the ferrodo pads except Prodrive?

Again all advice greatfully received!!

Gary

Gary,

I'd try Scoobysport like Rob said, mine are running on a SkyLine and i don't know whether the pads would be the same for a Scoobs or not but you're welcome to ask! I got mine from GTR Performance parts (www.nissanskyline.co.uk) another stockist is Abbey Motorsport (www.abbeymotorsport.co.uk)

Sorry Rob, I did ring Scoobysport, but the Ferrodo pads are £185, and whilst opinion seems to be they are marginally better than Mintex, not £125 better!

DaveU - where did you get them for £120 fitted?

I have had the Prodrive alcon disks for the standard calipers fitted and they use ferodo 2000 pads, think they were £138, could be worth a try asking your local Subaru dealer.

Gary

Don't GGR do them then?

If you aren't interested in performance, get the Mintex, if you are then its Pagid or Ferodo.

GGR do, but they are almost as expemsive as SS

Thanks for the advice though.

On a more serious note, have you got to the bottom of the Pagid Pads issue? I have forwarded you a copy of the mail I received from them.

Have gone for Mintex 1155.

250 hundred miles in, and I am unbelievably impressed. Stopping power far better than std's - (powerful enough to make sister-in-law swear!) Feels like completely new calipers - fabulous! and not one squeal!

Best £70 I ever spent!

Seems like there are a lot of different opinions on the Mintex 1155 pads.

I had the 1155's on my '98 tuned GTT and they were SOO BAD. The first emergency stop I had to make after about 50mls driving, and at a speed of about 80mls/h hardly anything happend at all, that was a scary moment, but I blamed it to the pads probably not being imbedded properly yet.
Shortly after I took the car to the racetrack (braking felt OK) but after some spirited driving and later during the day the brakes started to fade more and more, up to the point that it was no longer safe to drive at high speed on the track.
The day after I removed the Mintex pads and they looked very bad: cracks all over the friction material and at the edges the material was crumbled/broken off.
Some time later I again visited the same track with the same car with the original Subaru pads and it braked as to be expected (reasonably but some fading) but at no point as dangerously as with the Mintex pads.
I had the Mintex pads returned to the factory with my complaint and got the answer that the pads had been extremely hot, causing them to fail, Sorry, no warranty!
When asking them why original Subaru pads on the same car on the same racetrack under the same circumstances performed better and did not fail, they had no answer to give me.
Now on my new MY2000 5-door I just installed Pagid Blue pads. These brake a lot better, much more friction!!!!
Haven't tried them on the track yet, but will be there in about 1 week, let's see what happens.
I WILL NEVER BUY MINTEX AGAIN!!!

Are these better quality pads suitable for use with standard MY99 disks considering the cracking disk problem.

as members of my family have worked at FERODO for years (in Chapel-en-le-Frith, Derbyshire)... I'd buy the FERODO's

(I even worked there myself, in the labs, for six months on an student industry assignment back in 1981, working on the resin that binds the pads together... We lived just up the road from the factory then.)

"..eeegh. When I were a lad.. "
etc etc

Now, here I am in Switzerland

Since putting Ferodo DS2000 pads on my 99 the rumble under braking at motorway speed has completely stopped, not a bad side effect

Disks did crack with even just 1155 pads. Dealer offered to replace under warranty. In the end went for Bremsport Groved discs. The stopping power now hurts!! Upgrading pads made a huge difference, the disks have made an even bigger impact. The first time a really slammed on (with warmed up pads & Discs) with new discs fitted, the g-force was enough to give a split second headache! They do give a 'humming' noise under braking, due to the groves. but stopping powr is now nothing short of awesome. Having taken a friend out who had a 911(993) RS, he rated the stopping power as greater/more dramatic than that!

Bremsport discs were £103 incl VAT!

Is that Bremsport disks with Mintex 1155 pads that you are using and do the disks fit under standard 16 inch wheels? As your dealer replaced the disks are they covered under the Subaru warranty the same as the originals or is the warranty with the disk supplier? I presume that you are still using the original Subaru calipers. This sounds an excellent upgrage at a sensible price especially as they were replaced under warranty, will you be trying them on the track?

Dealer would only replace std discs with std discs under warranty, but given Bremsports were cheaper than OE discs they did me a deal, which involved no money changing hands

Yes I am still using standard (4pot) calipers, so as far as I know they will fit under 16" wheels. The upgrade of 1155s and Bremsport discs has cost £170 in total - so has to be the brake upgrade bargain of the year!! - the stopping power has to be experienced to be believed!

I've just Had some Ferodo DS2000 pads fitted front and back, I did ask for Mintex 1155 but the Subaru dealer said they didn't do them any more? and these were much better and improved. Didn't mention the price until she was ready to pick up, so I just bit my lip - £125 front £75 back and £100 to fit! They are a lot better though, not initially but put ya foot down and they dig into those disks very well (not sure how long my disks will last though!). No sqeaks or sqeals, stones don't (so far) get stuck between pad and disk, don't need to be warmed up, and haven't experienced brake fade yet - like the old standards, once hot - have to have another race with a motorbike and see how they feel

Oh yeah, and they are still no cleaner!

Jase - have you really paid £300 for pads. For £300 you could have uprgraded pads and discs, front and rear.

Ferrodo are good, but stopping power is (apparently) no better than 1155s - which are still available, just not through your dealer.

If your main dealer has charged you £100 for fitting, I would go back and complain. Even at extortionate IM rates of £40/hr, it does not take over two hours to fit pads.

How far did you go on the 'ride'?

GaryC,

Yeah I know, I should have asked how much when they mentioned the DS2000's from Prodrive, but then didn't expect that much!

I'll check the fitting cost, just guessed as the labour was all in with the service but that was the difference after the service quote? Should have ordered Mintex and fitted them myself!

The ride must have been over 10 miles, but then carried on blasting home for another 20 miles after a short cool off period

Question

So out of all this what is the best pad/disc combo??

New pads are a good idea but who can recommend a set of drilled/grooved disks to dissipate more heat

Have just fitted DS2000 pads front and rear to a MY98. It took 35 minutes, so with an air wrench take 10 minutes off this. It is a doddle - undo 1 bolt (lower) on each caliper and swing up to replace pads. It may be slightly different fo MY99.
The pads were £125 front and £75 rear plus vat from Subaru main agent. These are now the Prodrive uprated pads. If anybody is after matching them from possibly cheaper suppliers then the pad numbers are FCP1327S and FCP790S. I also drew the pad outlines so if anybody wants these then email me offline.
These pads are much better than the standard poop.

Best regards

Guy

Sorry for delay in responding Alan.

My 'combo' of 1155s and Bremsport Grooved discs cost £170 fully incl. I would doubt there is an option this side of £300 to rival the performance.

Simply awesome stopping power, and after 20 minutes of HARD moorland driving, no brake fade.
