STI8 Brakes Worrying Development?
#1
First time this has happened, just hope it's a glitch in the system. Pretty wet overnight, started scoob up and rolled down the drive - applied brakes and there was next to no bite, at least not enough to give me confidence. Decided to drive up the road 1/2 a mile and test the brakes out , first 3 or 4 shots and there was just no stopping power. After that normal service and was fairly happy that things were back to normal. Any thoughts on what was up - plan to get it checked out just in case?
Cheers,

What is an "STi8"? Do you mean an MY03 STi Type UK?
If so, there have been a couple of reports like this lately. While a couple of reports isn't anywhere near a big enough dataset to prove a trend, suppose it's possible that the pads might be absorbing water, which would then need to evaporate out before the brakes work properly.
Get the car looked at by the dealer, and see if you can badger them into replacing the pads. Doubt this tactic will work though. If the behaviour continues, get them changed for a known good compound...

Have the council been gritting round where you live? There were problems last year with Subaru's, SAAB's and Audi's brake pads not liking the stuff the council throws on the roads (its not just salt anymore).
Might be connected.

I have a similar problem with my STI8 when I clean the car. I've not discovered if its the wax in the soap, the alloy cleaner getting onto the disk or a mixture of the above and the break dust. I'm just glad I know it happens unlike the salt problem in 2002, now that was nasty
Not sure if it will improve when I change the pads
Hope you find an answer

I would go with DaveW - I had the same problem a couple of years back.
I even got the techn note from subaru - they said some of the grit contained a different compound (cant remember what) - but the upshot was that once it got on the discs they slipped until it was worn off. They claimed it was specific to the OEM pads.
When I swapped to TSL N+ with DS2500 I didnt have a problem.
Their work around was to apply the brakes at night when you park the car up.
It worked for me.

Thanks guys....yeah, I've a gritter visit every night so that might explain it. Not had the problem since so I'm not too sure what to make of it, still plan to get the local subaru garage to give it the once over.
Bit worrying when it happened first but no repeat performance ( then again haven't noticed gritter lately either... )
