Would it cause any problems if I had 215/45/17s on the back, and 215/40/17s on the front? I can get a reasonably priced pair of the latter and would be keen to save some cash. As long as they are the same on one axle that should be ok shouldnt it?

There's an approximate 5% difference in rolling circumferance with the numbers you give (assuming my maths is OK at this time of night on a Sunday!!)
1% would probably be OK... 5% IMHO is a bit silly. The centre diff will have a lot more stress put on it, and depending on the type of diff, then it could get a bit too warm, not to mention the interesting handling effects. 2 more tyres are going to cost less than a centre diff or a new Scoob (worst case scenarios - I'm a pessamist! )
Of course, this could be the solution to the understeer problem on Scoobs?

Thanks for the replies guys, I didnt think that such a small difference would be so harmful, I guess I thought that the suspension would adjust to take up the difference. The plan was not to leave it like this for ever, but to swap the backs to 40s also when required. But I guess I wont risk it after all!
