STI Type UK just doesn't handle anymore
#1
Hope someone can offer some advice.
The car has done 20k hardish miles and all of a sudden just doesn't seem to handle too well. It seems to dip under heavy braking but the steering actually lightens which is bizarre. I would expect it to tighten under such braking.
It seems to have some crazy understeer but not necessarily under power. It's just sliding almost as if a skid. I've checked tyre pressure and tracking and pas fluid and am now stumped. Booked into Subaru but they seem to know as much about the car as my 74 year old grannie. Useless. It's a company car so I can't take it to an independent specialist.
Any help would be very appreciated.

Could be the cold! Performance tyres don't work so well below 8 degrees. You will probably find that when setting from cold you get a strange bumping sensation that increases with speed then vanishes after 2 or 3 miles when the tyres get some heat in them. The problem is, when road surface (track temperature ) is cold you cant get the tyres to warm up enough to work properly - the rubber is effectively frozen - the tyres then just don't grip properly which would give you the light steering feel and understeer! Try fitting your wheels/tyres to another STi and see if it behaves the same, or if you have stock wheels/tyres just drive another STi. If thats the problem, then fit winter tyres and you'll be fine!
