Any recommendations please as to best brand of DOT 5/5.1 brake fluid?

Also advice on the cheapest retailer very much appreciated.

Fluid is for AP 6 pot system for fast road/track use, plus I'm very very heavy on brakes so must be DOT 5/5.1 not DOT 4.

Thanks in anticipation.

Personally, I think there is a lot of hype and BS surrounding DOT 5 & 5.1 fluids. Even if you are heavy on the brakes a good quality DOT 4 i.e. Silkolene Pro Race 2000 will be more than adequate not to mention cheaper.

I've currently got DOT 5 in my system but its due for replacement during upcoming service. If the DOT 5 is drained out can I chuck DOT 4 straight in or does the system need a good flush first?

Also is the brake pedal firmness likely to remain the same with the DOT 4 as it is with the DOT 5?

Thanks for your thoughts

Personally I would flush it, but that is not to say that it technically needs it. I also would not envisage any differnce in pedal feel.

Cheers

common misconception is that the higher DOT number ensures higher performance.......it does not!!
the DOT rating gnerally applies to the moisture repelant ability of the fluid......it is more important to check out the TEMPERATURE ability which varies greatly across manufacturers (this is why a lot of "race" fluids are ONLY DOT4, or sometimes not at all....., and yet outperform many DOT5.1)

we supply various fluids and could advise on something to fulfill your needs with a little more info.......

Alyn,

Thanks for your feedback. I getting convinced that the Silkolene Pro Race 2000 will do the job for me, which I know you stock.

All I'm worried about is the DOT 5.1 that is currently in the system and will shortly be replaced with something?? I'm worried about any hassle to clean the old stuff out of the system (if indeed I need to??). If its a hassle then I'll just stick with a batch of DOT 5.1, if not then DOT 4 sounds like the way to go.

Feel free to e-mail quote offline, in view of advertising restrictions etc...But any advice online would be beneficial to me, particularly the ease of chucking DOT 4 into a drained system which previously had DOT 5.

Cheers

Paul

I bought various fluids of AS Performance yesterday. Excellent service and very competitive.

Paul, you shouldn't experience any issues with a "drain" and then re-fill as long as it was a 'regular' type DOT5.1 fluid......

we stock a wide range of fluids from quality DOT4, race DOT4, thro' 5.1 to full RACE fluids........

Alyn,

For fairly spirited road use and really late hard braking fast track use, would the Silkolene do the the job for me then?

I've got AP 6 pots 330mm on an EcuTeK STi7.

The previous fluid was Ferrodo DOT 5.1 which hopefully should be OK judging by your previous comments.

Please mail me offline with a quote for 1.5 Litres worth of whatever you recommend.

Cheers
